53 international and Russian organizations dealing with the protection of media rights and Internet freedoms, condemned the blocking of the Telegram messenger and called on Russia to stop "an attack on freedom of expression and privacy on the Internet." The corresponding statement was at the disposal of the editorial staff of Novaya Gazeta. "Public outrage reflects the degree of interference in the Internet caused by the Russian authorities' attempt to block Telegram and a serious negative impact on freedom of expression and access to information," said Galina Arapova, director of the Media Rights Protection Center. She added that Russian society is constantly confronted with restrictions on the Internet and violation of fundamental human rights. Executive Director of ARTICLE 19 Thomas Hughes stressed that a strong reaction of all interested organizations and companies is needed to protect Internet freedoms.
