Cases against Shashi Weerawansa: Notices issued on two JVPers

Colombo Chief Magistrate Lanka Jayarathne yesterday issued notices on Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) General Secretary Tilvin Silva and JVP Parliamentarian Sunil Hadunneththi to appear before court on February 6 to give evidence regarding two cases filed against Shashi Weerawansa, the wife of National Freedom Front (NFF) Leader Wimal Weerawansa. They were noticed to appear in Court in order to provide evidence regarding two cases filed against Shashi Weerawansa over an incident where Mrs. Weerawansa had fraudulently obtained two passports including a diplomatic passport by submitting forged documents to the Department of Immigration and Emigration. The Magistrate made this order taking into consideration a request made by Deputy Solicitor General Dileepa Peiris citing that the prosecution is expecting to identify several documents in the presence of two witnesses. Giving evidence before court, retired Assistant Registrar General Sumathipala Hettiarachchi stated that Shashi Weerawansa came to the Registrarā??s Office on March 8, 2011 and requested that she wanted to amend her name and her birthday in her childrenā??s birth certificates. Retired Assistant Registrar General Hetticarachchi further said that he had received a call from former Minister Wimal Weerawansa on that occasion. MP Weerawansa asked him to issue a new amended birth certificate for his child.
